About

Akılkent grew out of field work carried out with a municipality. The starting question was: how much of a shift do collection vehicles actually spend collecting?

The story

What we saw in the field was the picture common to districts across Türkiye: routes were kept in the field supervisor's memory and the itinerary left to the driver. About a third of the shift went to trips to the disposal site and unnecessary driving.

We developed a route planning method that weighs vehicle capacity, working hours and unloading stops together. After the graduation project was submitted, we built the operator panel, the driver screen and the reporting module with our own means. Today the same solver can be applied to municipal solid waste and used cooking oil collection operations.

Team

Akılkent was founded by three graduates of TOBB ETÜ Industrial Engineering. We built the route solver, the operator panel and the driver screen ourselves; the work won first place in Türkiye among 106 teams at YAEM 2026 and continues under the TÜBİTAK BİGG 1812 programme. Gencay Eren Kaya is responsible for product and optimization, Doruk Aytar for software infrastructure, and Ali Çalışkan for business development and public procurement.
